Every great home theater starts as an empty room with potential. This Scarsdale project is a perfect example of what happens when you plan it right from the beginning.
The Starting Point
The homeowners had a large basement space that was being used for storage. They wanted a dedicated theater room where the family could watch movies, stream shows, and the kids could game on a big screen. The room had concrete walls, exposed ceiling joists, and no soundproofing.
The Design
We designed a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound system with a Sony 4K laser projector and a 120-inch acoustically transparent screen. The room got full acoustic treatment including bass traps, absorption panels, and a fabric-wrapped wall system that hides the front speakers.
Seating was planned for two rows: four powered recliners in front and a raised platform with three more seats behind. We added LED step lighting and starfield ceiling panels for ambiance.
The Build
We coordinated with the GC on framing for the riser platform and equipment closet. All speaker wire, HDMI, and network cabling was run during the rough-in phase. The equipment rack lives in an adjacent closet with proper ventilation so the room stays quiet.
The technology includes a Control4 system that manages the projector, screen, lights, shades, and audio with a single button press. Pick a movie and the lights fade, the screen drops, and the projector fires up automatically.
The Result
The family now has a true cinema experience at home. The kids use it for gaming, the parents host movie nights, and it's become the most popular room in the house. The soundproofing means they can turn it up without bothering anyone upstairs.
