How We Wire a House from Scratch: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Most people never see what goes on behind their walls, but the wiring infrastructure is what makes a smart home work. Here's a look at how we approach a new construction low-voltage wiring project.

Phase 1: Planning

Before anyone picks up a drill, we create a detailed low-voltage plan. This shows every cable run, every device location, and every connection point. We work from the architectural drawings and coordinate with the electrician and builder.

Phase 2: Rough-In

During framing, we install low-voltage brackets, pull cables, and run conduit. A typical home might get 100 or more cable runs including Cat6A for networking, RG6 for video, 14-gauge speaker wire for audio, and 18-gauge wire for keypads and sensors.

Everything terminates at a central equipment closet or rack location. We label every cable on both ends so there's no guessing during trim-out.

Phase 3: Trim-Out

Once drywall is up and painted, we come back to terminate all cables, mount devices, install speakers, and set up the equipment rack. This is where the system comes together. We patch and test every connection.

Phase 4: Programming

With everything physically in place, we program the Control4 system, configure the network, set up audio zones, and create automation scenes. We test every function and walk the homeowner through how everything works.

What Goes in the Rack

A typical equipment rack holds the network switch, router, patch panel, Control4 controller, Sonos Amp, security NVR, power conditioner, and UPS battery backup. We build racks that are clean, ventilated, and easy to service.

Why It Matters

Proper wiring is the foundation of a reliable smart home. Cutting corners during construction means problems for years to come. We do it right the first time so your system works flawlessly.
