How to Future-Proof Your Home During a Renovation

If you're renovating your home, you have a once-in-a-decade opportunity to build in technology the right way. Walls are open, electricians are on site, and decisions made now will affect how your home works for years to come.
What Does Future-Proofing Mean?
It means running the right wires, installing the right infrastructure, and planning for technology you may not even use yet. It's much easier and cheaper to pull cable during construction than to retrofit later.
The Wiring Basics
Every room should have Cat6A Ethernet run to it, even if you plan to use Wi-Fi. Hardwired connections are faster and more reliable. You'll also want coaxial cable for TVs, speaker wire for in-ceiling audio, and conduit in key locations so future cables can be pulled without opening walls.
A central wiring closet or equipment rack is essential. This is where your network switch, patch panels, and smart home controllers live. We design these to be neat, ventilated, and accessible for service.
Smart Home Rough-In
During framing, we install low-voltage brackets for keypads, touchscreens, and sensors. We pre-wire for motorized shades, security cameras, and door stations. If you're planning a home theater or dedicated media room, the rough-in phase is when surround speaker locations, projector power, and screen drops get planned.
Working with Your Builder
The best results come when we're brought in early. We coordinate with your general contractor, electrician, and architect to make sure everything is in the right place. Conflicts get resolved on paper, not on the job site.
What Most People Miss
Outdoor speaker and camera locations, garage network drops, attic access for future runs, and proper ventilation for equipment closets. These are easy to overlook but hard to fix later.
How SHIM Helps
We create a full low-voltage plan for your renovation. We attend site meetings, mark locations, and supervise the wire pulls. When construction is done, we come back to terminate, test, and program everything.
