Why Your Builder Needs a Low-Voltage Specialist on the Team

If you're building or renovating a home in Westchester, your general contractor handles the big picture. Your electrician handles the power. But who handles the technology? That's where a low-voltage specialist comes in.

What Is Low-Voltage?

Low-voltage refers to all the wiring that isn't electrical power. This includes network cabling, speaker wire, HDMI, coaxial cable, security camera cables, and control wiring for automation systems. It's everything that makes your home smart.

Why Electricians Can't Do It All

Electricians are experts at power distribution. But low-voltage is a completely different discipline with different cable types, termination methods, and testing requirements. Running Cat6A correctly requires specific bend radius, separation from power lines, and proper termination at a patch panel.

We've seen too many projects where the electrician ran the low-voltage and the cables were kinked, improperly terminated, or run too close to electrical lines causing interference.

When to Bring Us In

The earlier the better. Ideally, we're involved during the design phase so we can coordinate with the architect on equipment closet locations, conduit paths, and device placement. During framing is when all the cable gets pulled, so we need to be on site before drywall goes up.

What We Coordinate

We work with your GC on framing and blocking for TV mounts and equipment. We coordinate with the electrician on power drops for the equipment rack, in-wall TVs, and motorized shades. We work with the HVAC contractor on thermostat placement and the security company on sensor locations.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

Retrofitting after drywall is expensive and disruptive. Running one cable during construction costs a few dollars. Running it after costs hundreds. Getting it right during the build saves thousands in the long run.
